VCT Toolkit HIV Voluntary Counseling and Testing: A Reference Guide for Counselors and Trainers
Family Health International (2004)
Download Resource
This resource equips users with the competence and confidence to provide comprehensive, quality, and culturally appropriate services. Increased quality of services will lead to greater acceptance and utilization of VCT services. The reference guide includes discussion of: training and skills-building materials; sensitive HIV testing issues; basic counseling concepts; skills and coping mechanisms; standardized strategies to promote behavior change; and quality assurance systems. This diverse collection of information will benefit all involved in HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and support efforts, including health care providers, counseling professionals, community workers, and people living with HIV/AIDS.
The authors have distinguished this reference guide from others by highlighting the interactions among prevention, care, and support activities and emphasizing the link between VCT and the HIV/AIDS prevention-to-care continuum. This is an important step in combating the spread of the epidemic and mitigating its impact on those infected and affected by HIV. This is a valuable contribution to the future of effective HIV VCT and to enhancing prevention, care, support, and treatment efforts.

VCT Toolkit HIV Voluntary Counseling and Testing: Skills Training Curriculum - Facilitator's Guide
Family Health International (2005)
Download Resource
This publication was developed to guide the training of VCT counselors and is meant to be a VCT training curriculum. The Facilitator's Guide standardizes training in and provision of counseling services in various settings using a variety of service-delivery models. The guide is accompanied by a related document, the HIV Voluntary Counseling and Testing: Skills Training Curriculum Participant's Guide, which includes worksheets and checklists for the training sessions, as well as texts for demonstrations and exercises.
The materials in this training curriculum were selected from a variety of HIV/AIDS counseling training manuals. Although no training curriculum can be exhaustive, this one attempts to outline the key activities and information necessary to train people to provide VCT services. The training materials are generic documents intended to be liberally adapted to suit specific socio-cultural contexts. The guide should be seen as a living document to be revised as needed, ensuring that counselors have the most up-to-date information to deliver high-quality VCT services. The intended users of this guide are VCT trainers at the national, district and facility levels who are beginning or expanding VCT services.

VCT Toolkit HIV Voluntary Counseling and Testing: Skills Training Curriculum - Participant's Manual
Family Health International (2005)
Download Resource
This publication is a companion piece to the HIV Voluntary Counseling and Testing: Skills Training Curriculum Facilitator's Guide. The goal of these training materials is to train VCT counselors professionally to provide high-quality VCT services in a variety of settings. Three basic elements are involved in learning to counsel effectively: knowledge and understanding, skill development and self-knowledge. By developing these three elements, this training program is designed to foster competencies in three main areas: information skills, counseling and communication skills, and resource development and referral skills.
When used together, these publications help VCT facilitators and participants better their understanding of expanding VCT services.

WHO/UNICEF Joint Statement on Clinical Management of Acute Diarrhoea
UNICEF and World Health Organization (2004)
Download Resource
More than 1.5 million under-fives continue to die each year as a result of acute diarrhoea. But newly formulated oral rehydration salts and successes in using zinc supplementation can reduce the number of deaths. Though oral rehydration salts and oral rehydration therapy have been successful in reducing diarrhoea-related deaths for many years, in some countries knowledge and usage may be declining. Families and communities are key to the survival, growth and development of children. This Joint Statement prepared by WHO and UNICEF, emphasizes their role in preventing and treating diarrhoea.
