Adherence to Antiretroviral Therapy in Adults: A Guide for Trainers
Horizons/Population Council (2004)
Download Resource
This manual is designed for health workers, including physicians, clinical officers, and adherence nurse counselors, who work in antiretroviral therapy (ART) programs and have received some training on antiretroviral medications. The manual consists of four modules to be conducted over four sessions of approximately two hours each. The sessions can be conducted separately or as part of a comprehensive ART training program. For example, in Mombasa, the first module was introduced on day two of a five-day ART training course, with each additional module covered on days two, three, four, and five. Module 1 provides a background to adherence issues and is relevant for all health workers involved in ART service delivery. Modules 2, 3, and 4 focus on adherence management of patients on ART and are designed for adherence nurse counselors, but physicians may also benefit from attending, particularly the Module 2 session.

This methodology for systems analysis takes a holistic view of an organization or system. It is particularly useful for complex analysis of situations that involve multiple groups of health care workers or intersecting systems. A wide to narrow approach begins at the sectoral level, moves to the systems and process level, and finally, analyzes the performer level. It is a practical process designed to encourage investigators to probe information received, re-interview specific stakeholders, or add other interviews they consider necessary to reach a conclusion.
