These program examples were presented at the conference, Reaching Men to Improve Reproductive Health for All, held in Dulles, Virginia in September 2003.

This course provides an in-depth analysis of a strategic approach to reducing the continued high rate of maternal mortality in many developing countries. Central to this, as discussed in the first module, is an understanding of the causes of maternal mortality and of the need to make emergency obstetric care accessible to all pregnant women who develop complications. The second module explains how to use process indicators to monitor progress in expanding access to emergency obstetric care. The course also provides guidance on analyzing and developing safe motherhood policy and programs, assessing needs, prioritizing interventions in terms of cost-effectiveness, and monitoring programs.

Reducing Stigma and Discrimination Related to HIV and AIDS: Training for Health Care Workers

A two-volume curriculum offering a unique training opportunity for health workers in countries hardest hit by the AIDS pandemic. The training course guides health workers through an investigation of the root causes of stigma and discrimination while helping them to understand their own attitudes about HIV, AIDS, and individuals affected by these conditions and how these attitudes might affect the care they offer. The training also provides a review of clients' rights in receiving health care services, information about the use of standard precautions and proper infection prevention techniques to help minimize the risk of occupational exposure to HIV, and guidance in developing action plans to help the participants put what they have learned into practice at their service settings.

It deals with refugees and internally displaced persons, and what a health agency can do to relieve their plight. It focuses on policies rather than on practical aspects and is meant to act as a guide to decision-makers.

Five reproductive health needs assessments tools have been developed. These are: Refugee Leader Questions; Group Discussion Questions; Survey (for analysis by computer); Survey (for analysis by hand); and Health Facility Questionnaire and Checklist. The purpose of these tools is to assist relief workers in refugee and displaced person settings in gathering information to assess attitudes toward reproductive health practices and local medical practices/policies, the extent of needed service and the degree to which current services provide what is needed.

The Field Manual supports the delivery of quality RH services. Technical standards included in the Field Manual are those set by the World Health Organization. In several important areas, the Field Manual provides programmatic direction with frequent reference to additional resource materials that should be obtained and used to ensure comprehensive and reliable RH services for refugees. Field managers of health services in refugee situations are the primary audience for the Field Manual. Community-services officers, protection officers and others working to meet the needs of refugee women, young people and men should also benefit from the guidance offered in the Field Manual.

A comprehensive, 7-module resource designed to assist educators, students, and health care providers with improving reproductive health education and services. As an adaptable teaching tool, the Curriculum can be used in medical schools, nursing schools, physician assistant programs, residency training programs, and as an in-service training tool to strengthen the services of practicing health care providers. The Curriculum emphasizes improving provider-patient communication skills and cultural competence, with special attention paid to psychosocial, psychological, and demographic factors in relation to reproductive health care. The SourceBook is a unique, modular trainers' resource that provides practical solutions for developing a curriculum for training primary providers to offer high-quality, client-oriented, integrated reproductive health (RH) care services. The SourceBook was developed by PRIME with contributions from IntraHealth International, ACNM, Ipas and PATH. Each module is based on a specific reproductive health job and includes detailed information regarding major tasks of that job, the knowledge and skills required to complete the task, and assessment tools to evaluate the knowledge and skills. The modules also include references to other resources and extensive cross-references to related RH topics in other modules.
