Capacity Project Presents on Health Worker Information Systems 16 June 2009

On May 28, the HRIS Strengthening team’s Carl Leitner gave a presentation on training and capacity development as part of the global e-health track of the American Medical Informatics Association’s Spring Congress in Orlando, Florida. The conference, “People and Populations: Translation to Transformation,” focused on informatics advancements that are transforming health care around the world. Leitner’s session, “Using Free Technologies to Develop Accessible and Sustainable Health Worker Information Systems for Developing Countries,” raised awareness of the need for these systems as part of national health informatics strategies. In alignment with the Project’s approach, the presentation and interactive discussion emphasized the importance of engaging local stakeholders and training in-country informatics specialists to ensure sustainability of systems.

Global Health TV Report: Could new technologies solve global health problems? 15 June 2009

Global Health TV reports from the 36th Annual International Conference on Global Health, held recently in Washington DC. The theme of the conference was technology. Global Health TV talks with Shainoor Khoja of Roshan, an Afghan telecommunications company, about why wireless technologies are going to be crucial for the rebuilding of that country, while IntraHealth International CEO Pape Gaye and Karl Brown from the Rockefeller Foundation extol the virtues of open source software. Host Stephen Horn also finds the time to take a look around the conference’s technology expo to find out all about the latest innovations.

Capacity Project Tools and Resources Disseminated at Global Health Councl Conference 5 June 2009

On May 27, the Capacity Project hosted an auxiliary event, “Health Workforce: Using Better Data, Making Better Decisions,” at the Global Health Council conference in Washington, DC.

Focusing on the Project’s human resources information systems (HRIS) strengthening process, experts led participants in small group and one-on-one discussions about the HRIS Strengthening Implementation Toolkit, stakeholder leadership groups, iHRIS software, data-driven decision-making, the HRH Global Resource Center, HRH Action Framework and geographic information systems mapping.

Staff from Kenya, Mali, Namibia and Uganda shared experiences from their countries. Participants visited the tables, experimented with guided demos, reviewed a timeline highlighting key HRIS accomplishments and watched a short film on HRIS strengthening in Uganda. This interactive event was a unique opportunity to disseminate tools, resources and publications developed by the Project to facilitate the gathering and use of health worker data.
