Overview

The Capacity Project is USAID's major technical leadership initiative designed to address the significant challenges of strengthening human capacity to implement quality health programming in developing countries. The Project is a five-year Leader with Associates Cooperative Agreement with a ceiling of $250 million. It was awarded September 30, 2004, and is led by IntraHealth International, Inc.

The Capacity Project is a cross-cutting initiative supported by the Global Bureau for Health. The Project addresses human resources needs related to all technical areas within health, including family planning and reproductive health, HIV/AIDS and other infectious disease programs, child survival and maternal health. The Project is eligible for Field Support buy-ins or Associate Awards from USAID Missions and funding from all directives under the Child Survival and Health Account, including HIV/AIDS.

The Capacity Project provides state-of-the-art technical assistance, models and tools, knowledge sharing and project implementation services to USAID Missions, other U.S. Government agencies and host-country counterparts, including public- and private-sector agencies.

Objective

The objective of the Capacity Project is to strengthen human capacity to implement quality health programming in developing countries. This objective will be accomplished through three Intermediate Results (IRs):

  • Improving workforce planning and leadership to ensure that the right type and number of health workers are deployed to the right locations
  • Developing better education and training programs so that health workers have the knowledge and skills to meet the needs of their communities
  • Strengthening systems to support workforce performance and encourage workers to remain on the job.
